He began offering free delivery help to clients of the company during manpower shortages. Slowly but surely, those clients started turning to him directly. Impressed by his speed and reliability, they offered to pay him for the help. And just like that, his side hustle was born.
As demand grew, my father made a bold decision — to leave his job and start his own delivery business.
A Childhood Lesson in Reliability
During every school holiday, I tagged along on his delivery routes. Watching him work instilled one powerful lesson: being on time is everything in the logistics world.
So when I completed National Service, I joined my father full-time. But I had a different vision. I didn’t just want to run a one-truck operation — I wanted to build a full-fledged moving company in Singapore.
We had our differences, so I took another bold step. With just $1,000 in savings and a $2,000 loan from a friend, I rented a van and spent my last dollars on a small ad in the classifieds. The first few weeks were tough. But slowly, the calls came in. I held on to every single one like my life depended on it.
Within two months, I broke even.
In six months, I bought my first van.
A year later, my second.
This was a pivotal moment for Rodex Movers.
